Derek Portman (1927–2005) was a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution
of Mechanical Engineers. During his professional career he worked as a
production manager and director for a number of large companies including
English Electric, Serck and Rank Xerox. Latterly he was employed as a company
turnaround specialist and management consultant.
Throughout his life Derek was a keen amateur historian and read widely on many
different subjects and periods in history. When he retired he became a full time
researcher in the history of engineering technology.
Derek was appointed a Rolt Fellow in the Centre for the History of Technology
(now the History of Technology Research Unit) at the University of Bath in 1997.
